USB Cable Length
« on: April 12, 2009, 07:54:21 PM »
If you need to use a USB extension cable, or simply need to use a longer cable than the 2m cable supplied, please remember that the longer the cable, the more susceptible it is to interference which can result in corrupt data being sent to the ECU, or failure to communicate with the ECU.

When using a longer USB cable or a USB extension cable, please take note of the following -

1. Make sure it is a very high quality cable designed for reliable high speed data transfer.
2. Ideally it should have a ferrite core at the ends which acts as a noise filter that eliminates interference.
3. Use the shortest cable you can get away with to minimise interference, i.e. don't use a 5m cable if a 3m cable will do.

This is definitely something to keep in mind, I once made the mistake of using only a 1m USB extension cable of poor quality and long story short it did not go well  :D

Took a while for me to realise the cause too.
