Swapping auto transmission to manual 5 speed
« on: January 30, 2009, 06:16:47 AM »
Turbo-Tuner now supports 850 T5s which have had the transmission swapped from auto to 5 speed manual. You don't get a CEL, and you don't need to source a Euro/UK spec ECU either.

You do need to specify at the time of ordering whether you want the Turbo-Tuner ECU configured for manual or auto transmission.

Will the manual TT ECU still work with the auto transmission?  i.e. I want to sell my UK manual ECU and IPD ECU, and my swap is still a ways away ...

My guess is no, but I thought I'd ask.

Maybe Kevin can chime in here.  He is using his manual TT on his Automatic car right now.  I don't think he's having any problem with it.  I am not sure to what extent he has "tuned" with it yet though.

yes i have the TT MT ECU running in my 94 AT. i havent done any tuning at all because this ECU is for my 96 project car....i did go into the software and change it to the tuned map that comes on the ECU standard so i could disable EGR etc. but overall it works fine.

Would it be safer to use the AT ECU for conversion to TT and later when the need arise, use the (same TT'd) AT ECU for MT cars ? Or it doesn't matter ? Reason for asking is that the chipped ECU (AT) I'm using can be used for the MT and not the other way around. When opened, the insides of the AT ECU has much more SMT components than the MT ECU. So I'm sure there are some variations between the two.

Also can the TCU be tricked ? As for the ME7-PPC mods, we can remove the torque limiter for the low gears and thus I was wondering if we can perfrom the same for the post-ME7 cars.

James, things are a bit different with the Turbo-Tuner because there are hardware and firmware changes. However, if you want a TT ECU that works 100% with both manual and auto, then I can supply you with one.

ME7 is a totally different ball game and for torque limit removal you would need to ask your tuner. TT is not available for ME7.

Sorry Adam,

A typo in my post.... :8 .  My request was meant to be "pre-ME7" instead of "post-ME7" whereby maybe your development team has something in store for us who have autos. Just an idea, maybe a standard reflash of the TCU to regulate the coils in the valve-body to act differently ?

CJ,
You have an Auto right ? How do you maintain 300+ ponies with the gearbox ? Extra oil coolers, better oil, etc ? Do you recommend the TORCO ATF ? They were very much in the limelight a few years ago.

No,  I have converted mine to a stick.  I am running an M56L with a Quaffe differential.

James, in that case you have nothing to worry about at all. With the tuned TT, depending on how you map it, you can create loads of torque in all the gears. In fact, from past experience, the autos tend to launch faster than the manuals when tuned.

The main thing you have to be careful of with the 19T is boost spikes on the gear change at WOT, but again you can tweak the tune to address this.

CJ,
I was browsing Quaife's site and for the M56, the 800 series is not mentioned but the S40 is. Do they customize for you ? Care to comment ? I doubt if there's anything for the autos.

Adam,
Yes I agree that the auto goes off the line faster (though some are against this in other forums :D). Moreover I had my share of fun with the Manual-R and looking forward to own an auto as I did previously. Your post just gave me a gleeful vibe. :)

I didn't see your reply here until now.  I bought mine from somebody that already sourced it.  I think the S40 and 850 share the same M56 trans.  So the diff for the S40 will work in the 850.  Hopefully someone else can confirm this.

i think there might be, but personally i think the TT ecus should all just be tuned to be manual.... my manual tuned TT ecu has been running fine on an auto for over a year...

Ok... if there would be any issues... would i have to send in my TT to "switch" for a manuel one? Could that be done?

thanks
