Hi from Holland
« on: April 07, 2010, 11:32:07 AM »
Hi, I am Piet from Holland and I own a 1996 850R with a Motronic 4.3, which I bought 13 years ago.

After 300.000km i decided last year to do a major overhaul of the car, making it ready for the next 13 years.

I replaced the complete suspension front and rear, all 4 wheelhubs, the complete coolingsystem (heater included), the complete ignition system, fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator, the complete PVC system, all engine mounts, all engine sensors, all vacuumhoses, turbohoses, turbo, BCS, etc etc etc. In short everything that can wear exCept for the engine itself.
During the process I came interested in tuning the engine.

Non stock are now:
-19T turbo
-3" Ferrita DP with racecat.
-K&N airfilter
-MSD ignition coil
-High capacity fuel pump
-Eibach springs

Planned mod's
-50 mm aluminium intercooler
-so called japanese exhaust manifold
-reversed turbopipes
-Ferrita catback
-Green injectors
-stronger clutch (stage III+)

I had the car tuned by RICA. We got to a little disapointing 280hp, due to too much blowby with higher turbopresures. (Oil blew out of the dipstick).

So i decided to buy a used engine, which I am overhauling now. I have  upgraded connecting rods and stronger baerings (glyco sputter) installed, clinders are machined to the first oversize pistons.

I want to do the tuning myself (I am more interested in the technical aspects of tuning the engine then to break speedrecords on the road), I am convinced that the USB-ECU will be ideal for this.

I have made and installed a carputer and some stuff from innovative with which i can datalog all main engine parameters: AFR, turbopressure, the amount of O2 used (MAF sensor), throttle position, RPM, exhaust gas temperature, injector duty cycle, acceleration.
I am trying to measure and log  the advancement of the ignition timing too,  with the help of a microcontroller.

I am planning to experiment and learn with the USB-ECU  before I do the motorswap, if I accidentaly  blow up the engine it better be the old one.

I think I can learn a lot from this forum.

Greetings to you all

Hi Piet,
Welcome to TT.
Tell me more about the Innovate with the MAF / TPS / etc monitoring.

Who did you deal with @ RICA ? Wateringen ?

RICA Wateringen, that's correct.
At the moment i'am having troubles with the innovative!!! The so called aux-box stopped monitoring injector duty-cycle en accelleration. I had to send it back to them, i hope to hear from them soon.

MAF sensors and the TPS sensor outputs a voltage between 0 and 5 Volt which you can measure with for example the auxbox or other devices of innovative.
TPS voltage output  is linear with the throttle position, so measuring is quite straight forward.
MAF output is a not linear output, but in logworks (the logging program of innovative) it is possible to put the values in a table. So it can show the right amount of kg 02 at a given MAF sensor (voltage) output.

I mounted the aux-box of innovative in the same box  as the ECU. (Had to move the ECU from the middle slot to the left slot to obtain enough space for the innovative stuff, this was possible because my car is a manual and does'nt have an extra ECU for an automatic gearbox).
The convenience of this is that all needed sensor wiring is available there.
This reduces cables in the motorcompartment to the cable coming from the wideband O2 sensor and the LC-1 from innovative, a serial cable to my carputer, and a wire from the ignition coil to the ECU-Box.
Keeping things a little tidy.
If you want i could post some pictures.

Hi Piet,

Thanks for the input. From the Innovate forums, you see alot of issues from the users but maybe there are many more who benefited from Innovate. As I have a problem on RPM reading for the LM-2, I have made an order for Zeitronix ZT-2 + LCD display. Arriving in a week's time. Hopefully all things will go well.

Can you confirm the following for me since you are all wired up.
TPS - Pin A16 (voltage Signal) Pin 18 (Ground)
MAF - Pin A4 (Voltage Signal) Pin A5 (Ground)
RPM - Pin 20 (Signal Frequency) Pin A6 (Ground)

I planned to take the signals from inside the ECU (instead of the wiring harness), make a hole through the case and put a 9 pin socket there.

I might be coming to Holland during middle of the year and will visit Wateringen (Roel or Jr). Will drop by to see your car if you're near that area. Will PM you when things are confirmed.

Sorry for the delay in answering your questions..

The pins you've mentioned are correct.
I have attached the signal specs of the motronic 4.3

I also have a document attached with output curves of various Bosch MAF sensors.

Taking signals from inside the ECU with a socket on the ECU souds like a good and neat solution.
Hopefully this will not make any warrantys on the USB-ECU void though.

When you are in Holland, just let me know.

Hi Piet,

Sincere thanks for your info. Much appreciate on the schematics which I think you typed in the sensor names instead of us going after the connector numbers. Adam though has already given me the Signal Specs earlier - so kudos to him too. I'm sure other reader will benefit from your entries.

As for the warranty, it will be void but maybe Adam can put this as another add-on option to have a 15-PIN socket on the casing for a small fee and the terminals would have been soldered to the right places.

BTW, how's the atmosphere there ? My friend is stranded in Switzerland due to flight disruption.

BTW, how's the atmosphere there ? My friend is stranded in Switzerland due to flight disruption.

Our airspace has been closed down for almost a week also here in Holland.
Lot's of people who can know (pilots, airport directors etc) believe it was an overreaction of the authorities to close down the airspace for so long.
It caused a lot of unneccesary damage, is my believe.
But as from today all airports are open. I'am happy with that for we have planned a trip to New York next week.

The British and the Dutch have a huge financial claim on the Icelanders because of the IceSafe affair, well that's why it went wrong........
there is no C in the Icelandic alphabet, so when you ask for Cash, all you get is ...

Britain: Iceland are you crazy?!? Why did you send us volcanic ash ? Our airspace has shut down.
Iceland: What ? That's what you asked for isn't it ?
Britain: NO! We said cash! Cash you dyslexic idiot. CASH!
Iceland: Woooops...

Pete,

Need to ask you where the ground signal of the RPM is connected to.

I connected mine to the ZT2 signal ground (not Battery ground) and the car misfired

Thanks

I connected both signal and ground  to the ignition coile. That is: signal to the minus of the ignition coile and ground to the ground wire at the ignition amplifier attached to the ignition coil.
Works fine for me.
But i think that when you connect the ground signal to the ground of the ECU it should work also.

Thanks Pete,

Will try it out this weekend and feedback the results. I guess the ignition's signal will be stronger than the RPM sensor (5V)
